Russia launches Ulan-2: light tactical vehicle with electronic warfare system for the frontline (X @TheDeadDistrict)
Russia has unveiled the Ulan-2, an updated version of its light tactical carrier built on the GAZ Sobol van chassis.
The vehicle has been observed in operation in the so-called “special military operation” area and represents the expansion of the line of improvised military vehicles based on civilian platforms, offering greater payload capacity and durability thanks to the van chassis.
Images shared on Russian social media show the Ulan-2 equipped with an electronic warfare system on the roof, intended to protect against enemy drones, a growing threat on the battlefield. Adapted for military use, the vehicle features reinforced suspension, integration points for equipment, and protective modifications, following the trend of using civilian technology to fill mobility and logistics gaps.
According to Russian sources, experiences with Chinese Desertcross 1000-3 utility vehicles influenced the design of the Ulan-2. While it does not offer the same level of armor as dedicated military vehicles, its low cost and ease of production make it a practical option for widespread use, reflecting Russia’s effort to quickly adapt civilian solutions to the demands of modern warfare, including drone defense.
